PEONY
Peony are one of the longest lived perennials, often surviving 50 years or more. The large blossoms are showy and are the highlight of the spring garden, and make excellent cut flowers. Contrary to popular belief, ants do not cause the blossoms to open, but are attracted to the small amounts of sap avaiable in the flower. Plants peonies in a sunny site with rich well drained soil. Newly planted peonies will spend the first year getting established, and will not be floriferous. Once established, however, peonies have a deep root system which makes them drought tolerant. Plant peonies so the eyes of the plant are 1-1/2" below the soil surface, otherwise flowering may suffer.
The 10 reasons why peonies don't flower: 1) They are planted too deep or too shallow. 2)They are getting too much nitrogen. 3) They are over or under nourished. 4) The buds were killed by a late frost, disease, or excessive heat. 5) There was not enough light for the bud to form. 6) The plants are too young. 7) The clumps are too large or overcrowded. 8) They have been moved or divided too often. 9) The plants were cut back before the foliage turned brown in the fall. 10) The soil is to wet or too dry.

PHLOX
Creeping phlox require little care, and can tolerate gritty, drier soils once established. An even supply of moisture in the fall will help the plant to emerge in the spring with minimal dry foliage.
Tall garden phlox are an excellent choice to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Garden phlox prefer an even supply of moisture, but overhead watering should be avoided, and plants should be placed to allow for good air curculation to help prevent powdery mildew. When the first set of flowers is spent, trim back lightly to encourage additional blooming.
