HOSTA (PLANTAIN LILY)

Hosta are easy to grow perennial plants that perform best in fertile, moist soils. While all hosta will grow in full shade, some varieties will grow well in full sun also (please see individual variety descriptions for sun tolerance). All hosta produce flowers. These flower scapes may be removed after flowering is completed, or if the flowers are not desired, they may be removed prior to blooming without hurting the plant. Avoid planting hosta in dry, sandy soils and in hot, direct sun locations. A hosta that is receives too much sun will have dry, brown leaf edges. If this is noticed, transplant the hosta to a location with more shade.
ABIQUA DRINKING GOURD: Height: 18", Width: 22". Full shade to 2 hours of sun. Dark blue-green seer suckered leaves with a heavy substance and unique cupped form. The heavy substance of the leaves gives it excellent slug resistence. A slightly slower growing variety with white flowers in mid to late summer.
BLUE ANGEL: Height: 30”, Width: 40”. Full shade to 2 hours of sun. A classic hosta with large blue-green leaves of very heavy substance that forms a huge mound. Light lavender flowers are produced just above the foliage. Good slug resistance with a moderate growth rate.
FORTUNEI HYACINTHINA: Height: 16”, Width: 24”. Full shade to full sun. The broad, firm heart shaped leaves are gray-green above with glaucous silvery blue undersides. HALCYON: Height: 21", Width: 23". Part sun to full shade. Lance shaped leaves are some of the truest blue color of any hosta. An excellent grower with good slug resistence, Halcyon is also the parent of 'June'. Pale violet flowers appear in mid to late summer. Use with yellow hosta varieties and maroon coralbells to create an explosion of color in the shade garden.
KROSSA REGAL: Height: 36”, Width: 36”. Full shade to 4 hours of sun. Frosted grey-green leaves and a graceful, vase shaped habit. Leaves are wavy and of good substance. An excellent choice for the back of the hosta garden. A strong grower, especially for a blue hosta. Lavender flowers on exceptionally tall (5') scapes.
PRAIRIE SKY: Height: 14", Width: 18 to 24". Full shade to 2 hours sun. One of the bluest hostas available. Forms a tigh clump of powdery blue lightly cupped leaves of heavy substance. RED OCTOBER: Height: 10”, Width: 26”. Full shade to 2 hours sun. Long narrow leaves are blue-green on top and light blue underneath. Leaf petioles (stems) are red, with the color extending up into the leaf. A strong grower that makes an excellent choice for informal hedges and edging shade beds. Green leafed hosta are effective for edging, mass planting, and for accentuating the bright colored yellow and variegated varieties. Use these varieties to provide contrast and structure in the shade garden.
CANDY HEARTS: Height: 12”, Width: 15”. Full shade to 2 hours. An overlooked compact grower with small dark green heart shaped leaves. Forms a neatly mounded plant that always looks good. Excellent for borders and edging. Lavender flowers.
EMPRESS WU: Height: 3'-4', Width: 4'. Full shade to 2 hours sun. The largest known hosta in commerce! Huge, thick, dark green, deeply veined leaves form a massive clump. Relatively fast growing for a large hosta. Sure to grab attention in the shade garden! Pale reddish-violet flowers.
HONEYBELLS: Height: 20”, Width: 30”. Full shade to full sun. A large hosta with light green to medium green leaves that are long and wavy. Showy, highly fragrant lilac-lavender flowers in mid-summer attract hummingbirds. An excellent performer for full sun areas where a hosta is desired.
LANCIFOLIA: Height: 16”, Width: 24”. Full shade to full sun. Forms a perfect mound of medium green spear shaped leaves. Can be used as an edging hosta to provide a neat border. Will tolerate full sun with adequate moisture. Flowers are lilac lavender.
ROYAL STANDARD: Height: 26", Width: 63". Full sun to full shade. Glossy green leaves with prominent veins. Fragrant white flowers in mid to late summer. An excellent choice for mass planting and can be used to contrast variegated varieties as well. A reliable performer that can tolerate full sun with adequate water.
SEA FIRE: Height: 16”, Width: 24”. Full shade to ¼ sun. Leaves emerge an intense virtually glowing yellow green, slowly turning to a deeper green. A fast grower that provides great impact in the early season shade garden. Flowers are a deep lavender.
Any hosta with more than one color in the leaf is considered variegated. Use solid colored hosta next to a variegated variety to make the variegation more vibrant and showy.
CAPTAIN KIRK: Height: 30", Width: 20". Full sun to part shade. Broad leaves of heavy substance with wide, dark green margins and bright gold centers. An improved sport of 'Gold Standard', that is much more showy. Pale lavender flowers in mid to late summer.
DEJA BLUE: Height: 14”, Width: 20”. Full shade to ½ sun. A distinctive variety that will attract attention in the shade garden! Broad pointed leaves display a blue-green center with a sharply defined cream lightning bolt that dances between the center and the yellow-green margin. FORTUNEI ALBOMARGINATA: Height: 18”, Width: 36”. Full shade to full sun. The classic green and white hosta. One of the first hosta to come up in spring. Medium green leaves have wavy, creamy white margins. May lose some of its variegation in hot weather. Pale lavender flowers.
FORTUNEI AUREAMARGINATA: Width: 18”-24”, Width: 40”. Full shade to full sun. Deep green leaves with a hint of blue and yellow margins that hold their color all season long. A versatile hosta for mass planting, or for use as a specimen. A strong grower with lavender flowers on tall scapes.
FRANCEE: Height: 14”, Width: 30”. Full shade to full sun. Medium to dark green, somewhat glossy leaves have a narrow pure white margin. A strong grower that forms a wide, low growing mound. The parent of "Patriot', Francee is well suited for edging. Lavender flowers.
FRANCES WILLIAMS: Height: 22”, Width: 30”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Giant, blue-green leaves with a very wide, chartreuse to yellow margin. Leaves are thick, corrugated, and slug resistant. A showy variety with near white very dense flower clusters.
GLORIOSA: Height: 15”, Width: 24”. Full shade to 6 hours sun. A unique smaller hosta with a very thin pure white margin on a lance shaped dark green glossy leaf. A strong grower that forms a nicely mounded plant. Purple flowers are produced in mid to late summer.
GOLDEN TIARA: Height: 12”, Width: 15”. Full shade to 6 hours sun. A small to medium sized hosta with green heart shaped leaves edged with wide gold margins. A strong grower that will produce its best color when exposed to some sun. Dark purple flowers.
GOLD STANDARD: Height: 20”, Width: 30”. Full shade to 6 hours sun. Forms a large mound of leaves with dark green margins and light green centers which turn parchment-gold by summer. Pale lavender flowers in midsummer. A strong grower that will produce its best foliage color when given some sun.
GREEN GOLD: Height: 16”, Width: 24”. Full shade to full sun. Large medium green leaves with creamy white margins and heavy substance. A versatile hosta for most locations, it is a fast grower that tolerates sun well. Will resist slugs better than many other varieities. Flowers are a pale lavender.
GUACAMOLE: Height: 22”, Width: 36”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Huge, glossy apple green leaves are surrounded by streaked dark green margins and brighter chartreuse centers in summer. Large, fragrant near white flowers emerge from lavender buds. Displays good sun tolerance, and color will improve with some sun exposure.
LAKESIDE PAISLEY PRINT: Height: 10", Width: 20". Full shade to 4 hours sun. Heart shaped leaves with very wide, wavy green margins. The narrow creamy white markings in the center of the leaf shoot out in a feathery pattern, making this variety stand out in the hosta garden. JUNE: Height: 15", Width: 20". Part sun to full shade. Light creamy yellow-gold center leaf surrounded by a dark blue-green margin of irregular width. The light center will bleach to creamy white in sun. Lavender flowers in mid to late summer. A sport from the excellent 'Halcyon' variety. Slug and sun resistant.
MONTANA AUREOMARGINATA: Height: 27”, Width: 40”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Without a doubt, the most impressive large variegated hosta we sell! Huge, (15" long) dark green leaves emerge with a yellow border then fade to a creamy white and are of good substance. A strong grower for such a large hosta. Flowers are a pale lavender.
NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS: Height: 18”, Width: 34”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Medium sized dark green leaves with striking cream to white centers of good substance. The white center color is stable and does not fade like some other varieities with white leaf centers. A rapid grower that forms a near perfect mound. Pale lavender flowers.
PATRIOT: Height: 16”, Width: 24”. Full shade to 6 hours sun. Very distinctive dark green leaves with wide, crisp white, jetting margins. A smaller sport of 'Francee' hosta, this rapid grower is a favorite of everyone who sees it. Lavender flowers.
PAULS GLORY: Height: 25", Width: 40". Full shade to 4 hours of sun. Leaves are blue-green with a chartreuse center in spring. By summer they turn darker green and the centers brighten to gold. A strong grower that will provide an excellent contrast to solid colored hosta. Pale lavender flowers are produced in late summer.
REGAL SPLENDOR: Height: 36", Width: 60". Full shade to 4 hours sun. A sport of 'Krossa Regal', with a vase like shape. Frosty blue leaves with wavy, narrow, creamy yellow to ivory margins. A fast grower, especially for a blue variegated type. The lavender flowers are produced in late summer on 5' tall flower scapes.
SAGAE: Height: 28”, Width: 44”. Full shade to ½ sun. Huge, wavy frosted gray-green leaves with yellow to creamy white margins. Leaves are of a very heavy substance, making it resistant to slug damage. Lavender flowers on deep purplish red scapes. Makes an excellent specimen in the shade garden A slow growing variety.
SATISFACTION: Height: 28”, Width: 50”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Large pointed deep green leaves of good substance develop bright yellow, wavy margins up to 2" wide. Margins emerge chartreuse in spring, becoming yellow later in the growing season when grown in full shade, fading to cream with more exposure to sun. Near white flowers are produced in midsummer on dark green scapes. Exhibits good slug resistance.
STRIPTEASE: Height: 20”, Width: 30”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. A unique hosta with pointy, ovate leaves having sharply contrasting dark green, 2" wide margins and narrow gold centers. A narrow white, jutting strip appears between the margins and centers, giving the hosta its name. Pale violet flowers appear in mid to late summer. SUM OF ALL: Height: 36”, Width: 48”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. A sport of ‘Sum and Substance’ and one of the largest hosta available. Leaves are up to 16" in length, displaying medium green centers and 1 inch wide golden margins. Some sun will intensify the gold color. Slug resistant foliage with lavender flowers in mid to late summer.
TOKUDAMA FLAVOCIRCINALIS: Height: 17”, Width: 30”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Nearly round, slightly cupped, heavily corrugated leaves are blue-green with wide, irregular, chartreuse to yellow margins. Center turns dark green in summer. A slug resistant slow growing variety with white flowers in midsummer.
TWILIGHT: Height: 22”, Width: 30”. Full shade to 6 hours sun. A sport of 'Fortunei Aureamarginata', with wider creamy gold margins and heavier leaf substance. A rapid growing variety with lavender flowers in midsummer. Margins will be near white when grown in sunnier locations.
UNDULATA MEDIOPICTA (SILVER VARIEGATED): Height: 15”, Width: 30”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Wavy leaves have white centers and wide, irregular, green margins. May lose its variegation during the hottest part of the season. Lilac colored flowers.
WIDE BRIM: Height: 16”, Width: 24”. Full shade to full sun. Nicely mounded leaves are dark green with wide, buttery yellow margins. A fast grower that makes an excellent choice for edgeing and mass planting. Flowers are a pale lavender appearing in mid to late summer.
WHIRLWIND: Height: 20”, Width: 30”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Dark green, streaked margins surround a creamy white center which darkens to green in late summer. Forms a unique upright, wavy mound. Displays good slug resistance. Flowers are lavender and appear in mid to late summer.
Yellow hosta varieties will produce their most intense foliage color when they receive 2 to 4 hours of sunlight. Early to mid-morning sun is ideal, as the leaves will color well but won't burn.
AUGUST MOON: Height 20”, Width: 24”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Classic gold to chartreuse hosta with heart shaped corrugated leaves of good substance. PARKEYS GOLD BIRCHWOOD: Height: 16”, Width: 24”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. Clear gold, pointed leaves with a hairline light margin. A rapid grower that forms a neat mound. Color will be more intense with exposure to some sun. Lavender flowers appear in mid summer.
SUM AND SUBSTANCE: Height: 36”, Width: 48”. Full shade to 4 hours sun. A giant hosta with large rounded chartreuse leaves that will be more yellow if exposed to some sun. Leaves are of heavy substance, and will exhibit some corrugation. Slug resistant with pale lavender flowers on 48" flower scapes.
SUNPOWER: Height: 24", Width: 36". Part sun to full shade. Foliage emerges bright yellow-green turning more golden as the season progresses. A vase shaped plant that will become brighter yellow if exposed to some sun. Lilac flowers in mid to late summer.
